Prosit Neu Jahr! 2009
Oiah, only international students
Bring in the New Year was interesting to say the least. First off, pigs are a symbol of good luck so you give them to people. Lady Bugs are also, but Pigs are the primary luck bringers. Now, my favorite part of the New Year celebration was that we shared a dinner together before going to watch the fireworks. Our Belgium friends were in charge of making dinner on the night of the 31st for about 15 people. The thing about Austria is that stores aren’t opened on Sundays or on Holidays. So by the time they went to get the food for dinner on the 31st?. there were no stores open. This provided for some genuine improvising. We got a phone call from Mattias a few hours before dinner saying, “BRING EVERYTHING YOU HAVE”. We pulled together all our resources, which included a lot of potatoes and old bread, to make the best New Years Dinner ever. The most unique dish was one that was made with mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, cheese, cured bacon chunks, and taco seasoned hamburger on top. It was weird to say the least, but it still tasted good. The other thing is the most people forgot to bring their own silverware so we made our own using Aluminum Foil. We felt like we really accomplished something by the end of that night. So we celebrated by playing games and watching fireworks. This is one of those memories that are truly priceless for me. :)
Soli Deo Gloria,
Kellen
