Protest in Vienna

Eric | March 24th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Today my girlfriend (more about her trip here later) and myself were witness to quite an interesting spectacle on the streets of Vienna while we were out for a stroll on the Ring Strasse. There was a crowd of a hundred or so Syrians who were marching and chanting. We could not understand what they were saying, but got the message that “Kurds need to be freed in Syria”. Further research on the internet by myself did not reveal much on the subject matter. If you know anything about the Kurds in Syria, please post a comment! It was pretty cool to see a peaceful demonstration firsthand, and perhaps history in the making!

Also, hopefully this video will work for you:

In Northern Iraq, Northeast Syria, and Southeast Turkey, there is a VERY large Kurdish population. For years the Kurds have been more less trod upon by the imperial powers that split up the region. There is a mild separatist sentiment, and many Kurds openly want an independent Kurdistan. I spent last semester in Istanbul, and I can tell you that the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), a terrorist organization, has been running a guerrilla war in the Southeast, and occasionally doing bombings in Ankara and Istanbul.
