Recycling in Austria
I find it quite interesting when I travel to take notice to the local policies on recycling. Here in Vienna, there are recycling receptacles EVERYWHERE and readily accessible. It is very common even to see them full! They are usually located at a busy intersection, or near a tram, bus or train station, thereby making it convenient for residents to simply “deposit” their recyclables on their way to school or work.
When I first came to Vienna, I was told that recycling was once even more comprehensive (as it is they take about 6 kinds). Recycling is a way of life here, a product of a very progressive society. In fact, Austrians recycled so much, I have been told, that the trash incinerators used could not even burn enough to power the turbines! So, consequently, Austrians were encouraged to throw away more plastics, to aid in the burning of other trash that failed to ignite at the incinerator, seems silly to me, but is necessary I have been told. Recycling practices like those present in Austria should serve as a model to other countries worldwide. There is a reason why Austria as a country, has one of the highest standards of living worldwide.
Stay tuned in for more blogs about Austria this week! I am leaving for the Dachstein region, near Salzburg for a week of skiing in the Alps this afternoon. So blogs will be less frequent. Thank you!
Bye!

Hey Eric
Cool blog on recycling, when you get back to WVU you can hopefully encourage all your friends after the games what they can do with their “beverage” containers.
Much Love
