Bratislava!
After a lovely lunch, we all agreed to meet to go to Bratislava. Harry drove the family Renault, pretty cool car, first time for me in one! It was about an hour trip by the newly paved autobahn. A side note about the autobahn, on nearly every hillside along the roadway, small trees/shrubery was planted recently. Hannes told me in a few years it would grow up to be 5 or 6 meters tall, making the drive very green! This most definitely be a requirement for US highways!
I was expecting a border crossing exercise, but we just drove right through! With Slovakia a part of the European Union, the borders between the countries are much less impacting. I am not even sure I saw a fence between the two countries, just some border buildings and a few police cars. Amazingly easy to get to Bratislava, something that would have been impossible only 15-20 years ago (iron curtain).
Aside from a small old-town district, there was not too much to see in Bratislava. Since it was a Sunday, not very much was open. We walked around Bratislava Hrad (castle), it was destroyed many times and subsequently rebuilt just as much.:
Then we walked through Michaels Gate, the only surviving tower of the cities original fortifications, this view is from down the street:
We passed briefly through the Hlavne Namestie or old town square, pretty neat:
We all stopped for coffee at a cafe after lunch just inside Austria, very nice. Not much else to say about Bratislava from my end, if you have been there, please post your thoughts!
Bye!
