American culinary experiments...
“You want to try some Mexican food, burritos?”. Response, “Yea sure, that sounds delicious”. Haha, famous last words! A few nights ago, I invited some of my closer friends over for dinner, cooked (more like prepared) by me at my dorm. I decided early in the day, that “burritos” were to be the main course and chips with queso and salsa as a sort of appetizer.
So I begin the day rather early in hot pursuit of suitable ingredients for my Americanified culinary experiment. I hit all the local grocery stores near me, thinking, wow, it can’t be that hard to find tortilla chips, shredded 4-cheese, guacamole or even black beans. Well, I spent the entire day for those rascal beans and eventually settled on look-alikes in tomato sauce (campfire beans anyone!). I even made a far trek to an unknown Mexican specialty outlet, but arrived to a closed store front. Eventually, I had chips, salsa, queso, lettuce, cheese, beans, rice, sour cream and tomato. Nearly everything except meat for a proper burrito!
My food-seeeking adventures aside, I knew I had some work ahead of me when I got back. The goal was to have everything prepped, ready to roll (literally) when my guests arrived. Well, that got pushed back quite a bit, fortunately there were chips, hot queso and terrible salsa! One side note about the salsa here, it is ketchup disguised as salsa! Finally, it was rewarding to teach them all how to roll a proper burrito, a skill Hannes and Doris need to know when they are coming to Morgantown! I am wishing we had taken a photo, but there will be one later on a new meal!
Alas it was a meal enjoyed by all, albeit with a strange combinations of ingredients. I am feeling a little bad because the ingredients were not exactly the freshest, inducing some upset stomachs )-: My only hope is that I did not turn them away from real burritos with real ingredients! I am given another chance today, I am cooking for Thomas, Doris and Hannes omelets for lunch, we will see how they go!
Bye!
