Top 5 Fun Facts of Hungary

Rebecca | January 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 am

Top 5 Hungarian fun facts according to my handy Rick Steves Best of Eastern Europe book:

1. Hungarians you’ll encounter are generally polite, formal, and professional. Hungarians have class. Everything here is done with a proud flourish. You get the impression that people in the service industry wear their uniforms as a badge of honor rather than a burden.

2. Hungarians take their young democracy very seriously.

3. Hungary is known in Eastern Europe for its spicy food. Everything is heavily seasoned and with paprika, tomatoes, and peppers of every shape, color, size, and flavor.

4. Hungary is not quite the same as touring the rest of Eastern Europe and everything is a little different in terms of history, language, culture, customs, and cuisine- but it’s hard to put your finger on exactly how.

5. A typical Hungarian eats a pound of lard a week (they cook with it)

These are good facts, but I think someone should get some really interesting ones on here. Like, a guy who was Hungarian invented the Rubics cube!

What is lard? It was a great fact, and I don’t know what lard is! (please do not take this as a negitive comment. I was trying to find out what lard is.)

You make Hungary sound perfect for you!

About the lard: I know Americans are ridiculed for being overweight. Does cooking with so much lard mean they are overweight as well?

Hope all is going well!
